CALPOL LINKED TO INCREASED RISK OF ASTHMA IN CHILDREN

October 14, 2008

Giving young children Calpol or other paracetamol increases the risk of them developing asthma symptoms. In a study of 200,000 children in 31 countries, children aged 6 and 7 who took paracetamol at least once a month were found to have 3 times the risk of having asthma symptoms than those never given it.  Experts said it should only be used for high fever over 39C and not for comfort. It also increased eczema, runny nose & itchy watery eyes.  The study was published in The Lancet on 19 Sept. 08 and was led by Prof. Richard Beasley of the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand.

Please note Viburcol from the Heels range is a great alternative to calpol when you need to comfort a child. It is great for teething, general restlessness and when they are feeling out of sorts. Just a few drops on the tongue works wonders. Homeopathic, cheap, perfectly safe and useful for any age, from day old babies upwards…so use this instead.

CANCER ALERT OVER TALC

October 14, 2008

Harvard Medical School in Boston have studied 3,000 women & found that women who use talcum powder every day are 40% more likely to develop ovarian cancer.  Those using it once a week raised the risk by 36%.  Talc is made from hydrous magnesium silicate which is thought may cause internal inflammation which could lead to ovarian cancer.  Published in ‘Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention’  Journal.

Do people still use talc? I’m not sure. I would imagine it’s a bit old-fashioned. I you do, let me know and I’ll try to source an alternative. Certainly please don’t use it on babies!!

WHY YOUR MOBILE SHOULD CARRY A HEALTH WARNING

October 14, 2008

Mobile phones should carry a health warning like those on cigarette packets, scientists have warned. The authorities must not make the same mistakes over possible links between mobile phones & brain cancer as they did with cigarettes & lung cancer.  It took 50 years to get the tobacco industry to acknowledge the risks & 70 years to remove lead from paint & petrol, said Prof. David Carpenter, director of the Institute of Health & Environment at Albany Uni.   Dr. Ronald Herberman, director of the Uni of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute – one of the top US Cancer Research Centres – agreed & said: “We must learn from our past to do a better job of interpreting evidence of potential risk.”  He added that most of the studies claiming no link between mobile phones & brain tumours are outdated because many defined regular mobile phone use as once a week.  He added that most do not include enough long-term users.

THE GOOD LIFE ANSWER TO FOOD SHORTAGES

October 14, 2008

Britons should start growing their own fruit & veg in their gardens in the face of a looming world food crisis, said Dr. Tim Lang, Prof. of Food Policy at City Uni.    In World War 2 Britons were urged to ‘Dig for victory’. I couldn’t agree more that we should be re-learning these food-growing skills. Even a little pot of herbs or lettuce can save you loads of money, for a start.

SOIL ASSOCIATION URGES BAN ON PESTICIDES TO HALT BEE DEATHS Guardian 29.9.08

October 14, 2008

It looks like pesticides are implicated in the problem of the disappearing bee population across the globe. The Guardian reported that:  pesticides called Neonicotinoids have been suspended from use by the Italian govt. after it accepted that this group of pesticides are implicated in killing honeybees.  France, Germany & Slovenia has also issued restrictions on which areas & crops they can be used on. Neonicotinoids are used to kill insects on a range of crops including barley & sugar beet.In Germany Clothianidin has been restricted along the Rhine when bees died after its use.  In France Imidacloprid has been banned on sunflowers since 1999 & on sweetcorn since 2003 after a third of honeybees were wiped out. The UK has yet to make any move on the subject.

Stomach Acid – What’s Going On?

October 14, 2008

I found an interesting passage recently from The Amino Revolution by Robert Erdmann, one of the leading experts on this subject. I thought it might explain to you why I am always blathering on about making sure you digest your food and supplements better! Here it is:

“Usually when it reaches your stomach, your food activates the release of hydrochloric acid. This acid environement is important for stimulating the enzyme pepsin into action. Pepsin digests approx 15% of the food before it passes on to the small intestine. But for those people who suffer from low stomach acid (perhaps caused by smoking, heavy drinking or just age) the percentage will be much less.

One of the first results of this drop in acid is that the food will literally start to ferment. Here’s why: your body permits the growth of a certain amount of bacteria and yeast to aid digestion….the threat of any dangerous expansion in the intestine’s yeast colony is kept in check by acids and enzymes. Stresses inhibit enzyme production and allow yeasts to flourish. Insufficient stomach acid, leading to low pepsin levels, is one such stress. It lets the yeast colony become so overactive it causes fermentation. Large quantities of carbohydrate are then turned into alcohol, In some cases, this is so serious that victims literally get drunk on the carbs they eat. It distorts consciousness, puts massive stress on the liver and kidneys and often leads to hypogylcemia (low blood sugar) and obesity. Like alcoholics needing a drink, they simply cannot live without eating increasing amounts of carbs.

Few people realise that this can be traced back to a yeast problem in the intestines – still fewer that low stomach acid levels are directly responsible. We estimate that as many as 9 out of 10 stomach upsets mistakenly attributed to acid indigestion – too much acid – are actually the result of yeast fermentation from too little acid. The common response? To reach for the antacid tablet. But this only serves to reduce acid levels further and is the worst thing you can do.

Worse is to come as the undigested fermenting food reaches the small intestine. This is where the body secretes digestive enzymes. But with your body already under the stresses caused by depleted stomach acid, the pancreas can’t cope with the increased quantity of undigested food. Much of the food therefore just sits in the intestines and putrefies, releasing potentially harmful substances. The results of this may range from subtle changes in behaviour – how well you remember things and think – to severe emotional problems like anxiety, depression etc. In time, this leads to diarrhoea. Putrid smelling flatulence and stools, and a powerful unpleasant body odour are common physical symptoms of putrefaction.

Remember all the problems noted so far result from depleted stomach acid. And the implications of this depletion go beyond even these serious health problems. “I have found…that patients are either hypo or achlorydic (have little or no stomach acid). In order for them to get any nutrition, you’ve got to supplement their stomach acid.” (Newbold, talking about cancer patients.)

The first thing to do then to get a patient well is to raise the acid levels in the stomach to allow digestion to take place.”

It was nice to see everything I witter on about written down by an eminent scientist in this field. I then read on to see how he recommends you do it. Basically, you need replacement acid, pepsin, pancreatic enzymes, glutamic acid HCl and free from amino acids. These are necessary in bad cases as every digestive enzyme is made from an amino acid. Free form ones need no further digestion and can therefore be used immediately by the body.

Some of you ask why there are so many different digestive supplements. Well, here’s your answer: it depends what you’re trying to correct!

  • Betaine & Pepsin is pure stomach acid and pepsin
  • Betaine, Glutamic Acid HCl, low level pancreatic enzymes and pepsin are an all in one, but not too strong on pancreatic enzymes so good for lower or maintenance
  • Pancreatin is a glandular product much stronger version of pancreatic enzymes. Used with meals it helps you break it down in the small intestine. Between meals, it is said to help break down things that shouldn’t be there like protein fragments, yeast spores, fibroids etc.
  • Plant-based pancreatic enzyme products are used like pancreatin above but are less strong and vegetarian. You can get some with extra gluten and lactose digesting enzymes in them too.
  • Free Form Amino Acids are the building blocks of protein and provide the raw materials to make all the enzymes.

Simple really, isn’t it?! Hope you found that interesting. Sometimes I think it’s a good idea to show you the workings of what we’re talking about. Experts believe almost everyone, especially those over 50, need some form of support, which is shocking, don’t you think?

Weleda Skin Food – The Supermodels’ Secret!

October 14, 2008

Ok, what’s just £5.95 and is the favourite moisturiser of super models Helena Christensen and Erin O Connor, singers Rihanna and Joss Stone and actresses Winona Ryder and Brooke Shields? You guessed it – simple old Skin Food!

It is basically a very rich vegetarian organic cream especially good for dry patches anywhere on the body, but is described by those who use it as their secret to really nourish their face skin too. It has recently been featured in Elle, Vogue and Harpers & Queen no less and is becoming a bit of a cult item. Not bad for just under six quid – normally cult items are seriously expensive. Of course, she says smugly, I have been stocking it for ages, although I have to confess I haven’t really recommended it as a face cream, more of a skin sorter-outer, if you know what I mean?! So, try it as a face cream if yours is out of sorts and on the dry side – if you can get some, of course! First come, first served!

Green & Blacks Chocolate – Now Contains Milk Powder!?

October 14, 2008

I was shocked recently to see that Green & Blacks dark chocolate (the mainstay of milk allergy sufferers!) now contains whole milk powder as an ingredient. This is really bad news. I researched it and here is the statement given by the company…you’ll see the recipe has not changed, but because it is made on the same production line as the milk chocolate, new tests have shown it is almost certain to contain traces of milk…

Green & Black’s has announced changes to the labelling of its organic dark chocolate bars as part of a major packaging re-haul.

The new communication will highlight milk as an ingredient in its previously labelled ‘vegan’ dark chocolate bars. There is no change to the dark chocolate recipe but since both the milk chocolate and dark chocolate bars are made using the same production line there is a risk of cross contact. A recent audit revealed that traces of milk residues can still be found on manufacturing equipment despite intensive cleaning.

In order to ensure that consumers are at minimum risk the new packaging will clearly state on pack that milk residues may be present in dark chocolate bars across the range. The new packaging has already been printed and is filtering through to retailers over the next few months.

Dominic Lowe, managing director, said, “Green & Black’s is committed to an open policy and we have always been transparent about what goes into making our organic chocolate. While we feel there is no added risk to milk allergy sufferers consuming our dark chocolate bars, we want to keep customers informed about the potential inclusion of milk ingredients albeit in low levels and provide a clearer warning than we have done previously.”

For further information on the labelling change please see our Q&A which is available online at www.greenandblacks.com

Harrumph! (Much gnashing of teeth). Kinnertons make guaranteed dairy-free chocolate, and you can find them at www.kinnerton.com  , but I suppose if you feel you’ve been OK with G&B up to now, there is no need to change. Incidentally, Kinnertons are in most supermarkets and they make most of M&S chocolate apparently.

New NAET Vials for HPV/ Cervical Cancer & Flu Vaccines

October 14, 2008

Not that I agree with these vaccines necessarily, but for those of you who have had your NAET basics done, just so you know I will shortly have the vials of the new HPV Cervical Cancer vaccine and this year’s flu vaccine in. So, book in to clear them preferably before you plan to have either of these vaccinations, or afterwards, to minimize any risk of future effects on the body.

Also, I will shortly have the new homeopathic flu vaccine in so choose that if you want an alternative to the normal flu vaccine. They won’t be on the e-shop, so please ask me by phone or email if you want one. I haven’t had the price confirmed yet, but they are normally around £15 for a year’s vaccine.

Jacket Spud

October 14, 2008

When the weather gets colder, for lunch or tea I often think a jacket potato is great. Don’t do it in the microwave, though, for goodness sake. If you’re going to have one, pop them in the oven early (they take about an hour or so) so you get a nice crispy one. Yum! (If you are short of time, or have forgotten to start them early enough, do a sweet potato one which takes about half the time.)

Once your spud is cooked, split it open and mash the potato with a fork to make it nice and soft. Then fill with a dollop of hummus, guacamole or salsa and eat it just like that. Or, often I won’t have thought about what’s going to go on it, but I have jars of antipasti type stuff in the fridge. A spoonful of roasted peppers, aubergines and olives with a splash of extra virgin olive oil and some black pepper is really tasty. Or alternatively what about a dollop of pesto (no cheese, of course!) My fave is Sacla’s aubergine pesto; it’s really lovely. Why not have a bit of flaked salmon or crab and a side salad with it? If you’re really stuck for a topping, I really enjoy just a sweet potato with good olive oil and black pepper. Easy peasy, yummy and hassle-free. Enjoy…
